How to Organize Kids' Bookshelves

My sons' shared bedroom moonlights as a playroom. In an effort to control toy clutter and optimize floor space for play, I placed two inexpensive freestanding bookcases on either side of a window opposite their bunk bed and secured them to the wall. For months, they sat empty while I edited my kids' belongings (we recently downsized), but with my older children starting back to school soon I set a deadline for whipping these bookcases into shape.

The room not only caters to our two older boys (ages five and eight). We also have a young toddler in the house who spends quite a bit of time in the playroom as well. For that reason, I wanted the bottom halves of the bookcases to be mostly functional.

I placed woven baskets on the lower shelves of each bookcase and filled them with puzzles, costumes, cars, blocks, and other toys. I brought in a wooden stool that we've had for years and painted it a happy yellow. The stool comes in handy when the older kids are reaching for books on higher shelves. It also makes my life easier when I'm making up the top bunk. This little stool gets moved around the room a lot. It's so useful!

The higher shelves are devoted to figurines, books, "treasures", current Lego or Knex projects--even a Storm Trooper mask. These are mostly items that don't get played with on a regular basis or items that my boys don't necessarily want their curious little sister messing with.

Empty wall space is hard to come by in this room because of the furniture layout and door and window placement. I've always liked the look of art hung on bookshelves so I thought I would give it a try here. The boys were asking for more color in their room. I commissioned two prints from an etsy.com shop and attached the frames to the bookcases with 3M adhesive strips. I love how they turned out!

Desk lamps placed on top of the bookcases highlight the art and give the shelves a posh look. Now if only school would start so I could tackle the other half of this room!
