Kate Smith, of Sensational Color, shares her top tips for creating timeless decor with traditional pieces and bold color.
Traditional spaces are enduring, with a hint of old-world England or classic French country charm. Often looking lived-in right from the design plan, these spaces still remain fresh and warm, long after the space is furnished. Creating traditional rooms that don't look overly formal or stuffy is easy, when you stick with these classic color tips:
Darker shades convey an established, old-world feel. Incorporate deep tones of gold, blue, green, or purple for a truly timeless feel. You might also choose colors like navy, hunter green, and burgundy, which top designers frequently use to convey refinement. Notice the abundant seating in this space (above) creates a welcoming, not stuffy, feel even though the upholstery is rich and formal.
Don't worry about your traditionally decorated room getting stuck in the "dark" ages. Like this fun dining space (above left) or this beautiful, timeless kitchen (above right), consider adding a contemporary touch with rich jewel tones, such as sapphire, teal, turquoise, amethyst, or emerald. Brighter tones such as these lighten the room, while retaining an elegant, almost
regal quality.
Bold color is super-hot right now! Decorating with classic color and traditional style doesn't mean you need to reject being trendy. Add splashes of on-trend colors and patterns in the form of accessories. In this attention-grabbing bathroom, a very 21st century hot pink and graphic black and white stripes, bring this traditional decor into today's world. This strategy allows you to have the overall feel you want, while also giving you the opportunity to regularly switch out pieces that find their way onto the "out" list.
If you find comfort in traditional colors and décor, don't limit that feel to formal areas like living rooms or dining rooms. It's easy to evoke a classic mood in a bedroom or bathroom. In this stunning bathroom (above), the rich dark chocolate accent wall paired with the antique vanity sink set a gorgeous traditional, yet modern, tone.
Consider using local history to guide your traditional color choices, like in this home (above). If you live in the Southwest, for example, choose colors that convey the area's past, such as shades of green, orange, yellow, and dashes of turquoise. In the coastal areas of the Northeast, think of traditionally nautical colors (red, navy, crisp white) when considering a color palette for your home. The next time you drive around town, take a look at your area's historic homes to find color schemes that inspire you.
Well-done traditional design offers enduring beauty that looks timeless, not dated. Evoke the elegance of eras past by choosing beautiful, rich colors and fabrics that still allow your personality to shine through.
